4 Important Things to Look for in a Sleeping Bag

What to Look For in a Sleeping Bag

One of the worst things you could ever experience on a camping trip is sleeping outdoors on a freezing night. Sleeping bags are indeed must-haves when it comes to outdoor trips. They are not hard to find as sleeping bags of different brands, shapes, and colors are available in specialty stores near you

Shopping for a sleeping bag takes a lot of consideration. As mentioned, sleeping bags vary in brands, colors, and shapes so choosing the perfect one can be overwhelming. Here’s what you need to know in choosing a sleeping bag for your next outdoor trip.

What to look for in a sleeping bag

A sleeping bag should offer warmth on a cold outdoor night. Do everything before you settle into your sleeping bag – cook your meals, use the bathroom, and avoid layering. The more you layer, the more you’ll be prone to sweating and enduring an uncomfortable night. Other things to consider when looking for a sleeping bag are the following.

Types of sleeping bags

Sleeping bags come in different forms, but the most basic one is the “envelope” shaped with a zipper on one or both sides. Other common types of sleeping bags include:

  • Mummy-type – more fitted than the traditional sleeping bags
  • Double sleeping bags – meant for sharing by two persons
  • Long-length and extra-long sleeping bags – ideal for persons who are 6ft. and above tall

Season ratings

Sleeping bags are usually rated from 1 to 4, depending on where and when you are going to use them. Season 1 sleeping bags are used when camping during warm summer nights. These are also ideal for indoor use (ex. kids’ sleepovers) or spending the night at festivals. Season 4 sleeping bags, on the other hand, are perfect for cold winter nights.

Synthetic or down

There are two major types of sleeping bags: down and synthetic. The former is made with either duck or geese feathers, while the latter is filled with poly-fibers. Down sleeping bags have superb heat retention, are more lightweight, and are also suitable for all temperatures. On the downside, down sleeping bags are more expensive and may take longer to dry out.

Meanwhile, synthetic sleeping bags are easier to clean and a cheaper option. It can retain also half of its insulating ability even when wet. On the downside, synthetic insulation may not retain heat longer than down sleeping bags. They are also bulkier which makes packing a little challenging unlike with down sleeping bags.

Other features

Aside from the material, shape, and size, sleeping bags also have other essential features such as:

  • Inner linings – cotton and flannel are the most popular materials used for sleeping bag linings
  • Zippers – some have right and left side zips, while some are two-way zippers
  • Hood – keeps your head cool literally, should also have a drawcord closure to adjust the hood tightness
  • Inner pockets – perfect for storing your stuff and keeping them tucked away safely such as your phone and wallets
