A Basic Guide to Buying Cocktail Shakers

Basic Guide to Cocktail Shakers

When you go to a bar, you would most likely see a well-dressed bartender, a bar towel on one hand (or hung on one arm), and a cocktail shaker on another. Do you know the story behind this essential drink mixing tool? You can opt to make your cocktail drinks at home if you’re not fond of bar hopping on weekend night outs.

Where did cocktail shakers come from?

You will be shocked to know that the early versions of cocktail shakers have been around already for thousands of years. It was not the modern cocktail shakers that we know of. Instead, jar gourds were being used in prehispanic Mexico to mix liquid concoctions and then consumed later on.

These ancient liquid-mixing vessels evolved throughout centuries until the 1800s. During that time, bartenders were not using jar gourds to mix drinks but used two cups instead. Cocktail shakers became more popular in the 1900s but dropped significantly due to the prohibition in the 1920s to 1930’s. In come 1950s, alcohol consumption became popular again and more prevalent.

Nowadays, a lot of people enjoy a few drinks especially during special occasions and night-outs. But even those who are not fond of going to bars and pubs can still enjoy refreshing drinks in the comfort of their homes thanks to the availability of cocktail shakers.

What to consider in choosing the best cocktail shaker

First of all, you need to know the different types of cocktail shakers available in the market. These are:

Boston shaker

This one is the most common cocktail shakers that you would often see in bars. It was inspired by that early cocktail shaker back in the 1800s. Boston shakers use two separate cups, one bigger than the other. You have to stack the larger cup over the smaller one upside down to shake and mix the liquid concoction.

Some Boston shakers have one steel and one glass cup, while others have two steel cups. If you want a more durable shaker, you can opt for the latter set. It is generally easy to clean and does not get stuck when you stack them. However, you might need to use a separate strainer for the drinks.

Cobbler shaker

It has a distinguished shape with three components. It is also said to be a “beginner-friendly” shaker thanks to its ease of usage. There is also no need to buy a separate strainer as it already has a built-in strainer. On the downside, cobbler shakers are prone to leakage. Make sure to press the cap at the top or end up creating a mess upon shaking the liquid inside!

French shaker

Unlike the abovementioned shakers, French shakers are less common but have the classiest look among the three. However, this does not include a strainer and can be harder to find.

Even if you don’t have a cocktail shaker at home, you can still use alternatives. For one, you can use any sealable container, add ice, and shake away! Avoid using glass containers as much as possible. You can use any ordinary kitchen strainer – it can work just the same with cocktail shakers.
