Should You Use Aromatherapy? Here’s What to Know

Benefits of Essential Oils

Essential oils already exist and are being used for thousands of years. Nowadays, essential oils are used to make your space smell good and relaxing. Back then, these oils were used to improve your mood and overall health. There is no doubt that a lot of people use aromatherapy as an alternative medicine for health improvement.

What is aromatherapy?

Aromatherapy often comes in different forms such as essential oils and scented candles. Most are used in massages, inhalation, or applied onto the skin. These aromatic products are readily available in most nearby beauty and variety stores.

For starters, aromatherapy refers to the therapeutic use of aromatic substances such as essential oils mainly for health purposes. Essential oils are derived from raw vegetable material through steam or dry distillation or a mechanical process using citrus fruits.

Studies also show that a lot of essential oils have antimicrobial, antioxidant, and antiviral properties. While aromatherapy products are mostly derived from natural products (i.e. Plants), these also contain chemicals and can be dangerous to health when used improperly. That is why you should seek advice from a professional before using essential oils or aromatherapy for healing purposes.

Benefits of aromatherapy

Remember that aromatherapy won’t guarantee 100 percent healing from illnesses. However, it can also do wonders on your health and offer support from traditional treatments for all sorts of medical conditions. It is also said that aromatherapy helps in reducing common illnesses such as:

  • Body aches
  • Headaches
  • Hair loss
  • Dysmenorrhea/menstrual pains
  • Insomnia/Fatigue
  • Nausea
  • Anxiety/Depression/Stress

Some essential oils can be applied to treat skin diseases such as psoriasis. However, it is better to consult medical personnel first before using it on the skin. The same goes when using essential oils to treat digestive problems – never swallow essential oils as well.

As mentioned, there are different kinds of essential oils, each of which has various purposes and benefits.

  • Bergamot essential oil – said to help heal digestive and urinary tract problems
  • Chamomile – can promote better sleep and also help heal eczema
  • Citronella – acts as an insect repellent
  • Eucalyptus – helps heal colds or treat flu, can be combined with peppermint
  • Jasmine and sandalwood – said to be an aphrodisiac
  • Lemon – improves mood and lessens the feeling of stress and anxiety
  • Rosemary – promotes hair growth, enhances memory, and improves nervous and circulatory systems.
  • Thyme – helps in reducing stress and fatigue

How to use aromatherapy

As mentioned, there are several ways to apply aromatherapy such as through:

Topical application

Some beauty products may be infused with essential oils that can be easily absorbed by the skin. Make sure to massage the area where it is applied for further absorption and better circulation. You do not directly apply essential oils to the skin and instead should be diluted with a carrier oil. Make sure to do an allergy test first before using an essential oil on the skin.

Inhalation

You use essential oils with a diffuser or spray to breathe the scent in. Its steam has a pleasant smell and can also help improve health problems.
