What to Consider Before Washing Stuffed Toys

How to clean a stuffed toy properly

Our childhood would not be complete without playing with stuffed toys. Back when we were kids, even until we had our kids, stuffed toys gave us comfort and warmth and completed our childhood. They are not hard to find and are available in all toys and gift stores near you. We even had our favorite stuffed toy back then – and perhaps even passed on some of our favorite ones to our children!

There is no doubt how stuffed toys impacted our childhood. It even became something we cannot live without, and something that our (future) kids will surely enjoy having. But of course, we also need to take care of toys. For one thing, stuffed toys need to be washed once in a while to keep them from being too dusty and grimy.

Should you wash stuffed toys?

Among a wide assortment of toys you have at home, there will be at least one toy that will be used or played with more often. In that case, you could expect that toy to be dirtier and grimier than the other toys. That is why you should make effort to clean your children’s toys more often and ensure their health and safety.

Also, did you know that there is a proper way to wash stuffed toys? You can even find the wash instruction tag attached to the plush toy (assuming that it is still attached and intact). That will help clean your stuffed toys and keep them fresh and clean for a long time.

All the more you need to wash stuffed toys if you bought them at a garage sale or thrift store. You also need to do so to get rid of any bacteria, lice, or bugs deep-seated within the toy’s plush fibers. Not washing it can cause reactions especially for kids with allergy or asthma issues.

How to wash stuffed toys properly

Stuffed toys can be washed either by washing machine or by hand. If you wash it in the washing machine, put them in an old stocking, mesh bag, or a pillowcase (just tie the top with a knot). If the stuffed toy has some extra embellishment or electronic parts, it should be washed by hand. Better yet, follow the wash instructions indicated in the label or tag.

When to wash stuffed toys

It is recommended to get rid of dust and dirt from your stuffed toys at least once a month. Better to use a soft-bristled brush or a small vacuum to remove dust from the toy. After drying, fluff up its fibers and prevent tangles using a soft-bristled brush.

How to dry a stuffed toy

Among ways to dry a stuffed toy is through the following:

  • Air drying the washed stuffed toy
  • Roll in a clean, thick towel to get rid of excess water
  • Hang it using clothespins to dry
  • Use a clothes dryer (set into lowest heat)

In this case, you can spot clean or freshen them up. For spot cleaning, mix a teaspoon of dish detergent in a cup of cold water. Do a spot test first, then use a ragged corner to wipe the surface of the toy and remove dirt and grime.
